Though the band had not been officially formed, Ulrich asked Brian Slagel, founder of Metal Blade Records, if it would be possible to record a song for an album for the label. Slagel agreed and hired James Hetfield to play guitar on the track, and five months later, Metallica was formed.

Though many believe that the members themselves came up with the name, Lars Ulrich’s friend Rob Quintana was the one who suggested Metallica. Since Ulrich liked the name Metallica, he suggested that Quintana name his magazine MetalMania.
